Materials you must never cut in a laser

The laser safety rules that matter more than which machine you buy

A laser cutter is only as safe as what you put in it. Two rules cover most of the danger: never cut anything containing chlorine - PVC, vinyl and faux leather above all, because it releases toxic gas and acid that harms you and destroys the machine; and if you do not know what a material is, do not cut it. Everything below is the detail behind those two sentences.

Never cut these

Each of these either poisons the air, destroys the machine, or catches fire - often more than one at once. There is no setting or extraction system that makes them safe.

Cutting bare metal at all is a fibre-laser job, not a diode or CO₂ one.

The chlorine rule, and why it is first

Of everything on this page, PVC is the one that will hurt you and your machine at the same time. When a laser burns polyvinyl chloride it breaks the chlorine out of the plastic, and that chlorine combines with moisture to form hydrochloric acid. The acid settles on every surface the fume touches - mirrors, lenses, rails, the control board — and corrodes it from the inside out over weeks, long after the smell has gone. The gas itself is a respiratory poison.

The trap is that PVC hides. Vinyl stickers and banners, imitation leather, some craft foam, cheap tablecloth material, a lot of unlabelled sheet plastic from a discount shop - all can be PVC. This is the whole reason the “if you don't know what it is, don't cut it” rule exists. A cheap chlorine test kit, or a copper-wire flame test done well away from the machine, will tell you before the laser does.

Acrylic yes, polycarbonate no - the confusion that starts fires

Cast acrylic (PMMA, sold as Plexiglas or Perspex) is one of the best materials a laser can cut - it slices cleanly and flame-polishes its own edge. Polycarbonate (Lexan) looks identical on the shelf and behaves nothing alike: it absorbs the infrared beam poorly, so instead of cutting it heats, discolours to a burnt yellow and catches fire. Buying “clear plastic sheet” without confirming which one you have is a common and expensive mistake. If the supplier cannot tell you it is cast acrylic, treat it as unknown.

Generally safe - with the caveat that makes it so

Safe is never unconditional. Every one of these still produces fume or is flammable; the caveat is the part people skip.

The three rules that outrank the material list

Extract the fume, always. Even the safe materials produce smoke and fine particulate - MDF binder, plywood glue, engraved wood. A laser needs ducted extraction to the outside or a rated fume filter, running whenever the beam is on. This is not an upgrade; it is part of owning the machine.

Never leave a running laser unattended. Almost everything a laser cuts is flammable, and a small flare at the cut line becomes a bed fire in seconds. Stay with the machine, keep the lid closed, and have a way to cut power and smother a fire within reach. Most laser fires happen during a job the operator stepped away from.

Protect your eyes with the right glasses. Laser safety glasses are rated for a specific wavelength - a pair made for a blue diode laser does nothing against a CO₂ or fibre beam, and vice versa. Match the glasses to the machine, and rely on the enclosure and interlocks rather than treating eyewear as the primary defence.

This is general safety guidance, not a substitute for your machine's manual or your material supplier's safety data sheet. When a material's composition is uncertain, the correct action is always not to cut it.
