A plasma table is a large-format sheet-metal cutter, and two figures dominate the decision: how thick a plate it cuts cleanly, which comes from the amperage of the plasma cutter it is configured with, and how big a sheet fits on the table. Automatic torch height control is the feature most worth paying for, because plate warps as it heats and a fixed-height torch pulls the cut out of tolerance. Plasma cuts electrically conductive metal only - steel, stainless and aluminium - so if your work is wood or plastic this is the wrong category entirely; a router or a laser is what you want. Note too that some tables are sold as the motion system alone and need a plasma cutter added, while others ship as a bundle with a rated cutter, which is what makes their cut capacity knowable.

What actually matters here

  • Envelope first. Work out the largest piece you genuinely need to cut, then rule out everything that cannot take it before comparing any other specification.
  • Drive quality second. Closed-loop control and ball screws are what hold accuracy under load; they are also the components that are expensive to change later.
  • Total cost last. Check whether the price includes a spindle, a table and dust hardware before comparing two machines on their headline numbers.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Comparing a bare platform against a complete machine. 2 machines on this list ship without a spindle, and sometimes without a table or spoilboard either. That price is not comparable to one that includes a cutter until you have added the missing parts, which can be several hundred dollars.
  • Cutting slower when the edge burns. It is the most common instinct and it is backwards. A burn means the chip is too thin to carry heat out of the cut, so the cutter is rubbing rather than shearing - feed faster or drop the spindle speed. The chip load calculator will confirm which side of the range you are on before you change anything.

Understanding desktop CNC routers

A CNC router is a gantry that moves a spinning cutter through three axes under G-code control. What separates one from another is almost never the software - most desktop machines run GRBL and accept the same toolpaths - but the mechanics: how the motion is driven, how rigidly the gantry resists the cutting forces pushing back at it, and whether the controller knows where the tool actually is rather than where it commanded it to be.

Drive type is the clearest dividing line. Belts are cheap, forgiving of a crash and quick to replace, but they stretch under load. Lead screws are stiffer and slower. Ball screws are stiffer again and back-drive far less, which is why they appear on machines aiming at metal or at precision in hardwood.

Control is the other. An open-loop stepper is told to move and assumed to have moved; a closed-loop one reports back, so the controller knows when a step was lost and can correct it. On wood the difference is often invisible. On anything where the part has to be dimensionally right, it is the whole ballgame.

How thick can a CNC plasma table cut?
