The Coast Runner CR-1 is a industrial CNC mill. A mill is judged on rigidity before anything else - the mass and frame that let it hold a tolerance in metal.
The Coast Runner CR-1 is a genuinely unusual machine: a desktop CNC mill that weighs 42 pounds, runs on standard household power, and is designed to cut steel and titanium - materials that normally demand a machine many times its mass. Where a Tormach achieves rigidity through cast iron, the CR-1 aims to achieve it through design, in a package about the size of a microwave. It is explicitly a mill, not a router.
That capability is the whole story. The maker positions it for wood, Delrin, aluminium, brass, stainless, tool steels and titanium, driven by a custom VFD spindle running 1,500 to 8,000 rpm and rated to 0.001-inch precision. Cutting titanium on a benchtop machine at household power is a real engineering claim, and it is what the CR-1 is known for. That same at-home metal capability has also drawn legal scrutiny: California named Coast Runner in a 2024 lawsuit over the potential for such machines to produce unserialised firearm parts.
Availability is the thing to check before anything else. Coast Runner's own site shows a reservation rather than an in-stock cart, the original crowdfunding campaign was suspended, and the company has since restructured in Austin, Texas. The machine ships and has been reviewed, but it is not an off-the-shelf purchase today - so treat this as a notable machine you reserve at a stated $2,500, and confirm current lead time and orderability directly before committing money.
The difference from a desktop router is the entire point. A router removes wood and plastic quickly across a large bed; the CR-1 does the opposite - a small, rigid envelope built to hold a tolerance in hard metal. If your work is signage or cabinetry, this is the wrong tool; if it is small titanium or steel parts on a bench, there is very little else in its class at its size.
Before reserving, confirm the things a reservation cannot: the current lead time, whether the price still holds, and the published work-area travels, which the site does not state in exact figures - ask for them in writing, because envelope is the specification a compact mill is most likely to disappoint on. And ask what support and spares look like from a company that has recently restructured, since that matters more on a low-volume machine than on a mass-market one.

Metal has to be clamped hard and square. A precision milling vice, and a set of clamps or fixture plate, is what actually holds the tolerance the machine is capable of.
Metal cutting generates heat that dulls tools and welds chips to the work. Flood or mist coolant, or at minimum a manual cutting fluid, keeps the cutter alive and the finish clean.
Finding the exact zero on a metal part is what makes the second and third parts match the first. An edge finder is the minimum; a touch probe automates it.
