A CO₂ laser's infrared beam couples into organic materials and acrylic far more efficiently than a diode, so at the same wattage it cuts several times thicker - and it cuts clear acrylic, which a diode cannot touch. It will mark coated and anodised metal but will not cut bare metal. This is the general-purpose cutter of the desktop laser world.

Fume extraction

A laser removes material as smoke and fine particulate. Ducted extraction to the outside, or a rated fume filter, has to run whenever the beam is on - this is part of owning the machine, not an upgrade.

Wavelength-matched safety glasses
