The Syil X5 is a compact BT30 machining centre, not a desktop mill in the Nomad or Carvera sense. It puts a 20,000 rpm direct-coupled BT30 spindle, a SCHNEEBERGER mineral-cast bed, THK ball screws and a Siemens SINUMERIK 828D control into a footprint about one metre wide - the specification of an industrial machine in a body that fits through a workshop door.

Who buys an X5

The buyer is a shop that needs real metal-cutting capability and tool automation without the floor space or the price of a full VMC. BT30 tooling, a 16-pocket servo tool changer and an industrial control put the X5 in the same conversation as a Tormach or an entry Haas rather than a hobby mill. Its own distributor states plainly that this is not a hobby machine, and the specification bears that out.

What it costs, and why we can't quote it

There is no single price to publish, and neither the maker nor the distributor quotes one without knowing your configuration and region. A distributor starting figure of around $24,990 has appeared, but the real number moves with the spindle and control options, the tooling package and where in the world you are buying. In the United States the machine is distributed by TITANS of CNC, and a quote runs through them. We record the starting figure as a distributor number rather than as a list price, because that is what it is.

Why there is no score on this page

As with the other quote-configured machines here, no score is computed. The X5 is sold to a configuration rather than off a fixed spec sheet, and while it publishes a great deal - travels, spindle, tool changer, bed and control - the price that anchors a value comparison is a quote. Scoring it against desktop mills on partial data would produce a number that flatters or penalises it arbitrarily, so the page states what is published and leaves the number off.

How it differs from a desktop mill

The gap between the X5 and a desktop mill like the Nomad 3 or Carvera is not size - they share a bench-scale footprint. It is the spindle taper and the rigidity behind it. A BT30 spindle on a mineral-cast bed takes a bite of steel that an ER-collet spindle on an aluminium frame cannot, and the servo tool changer runs production rather than one-off parts. This is a machine bought to make money in metal, not to learn on.

What to ask before you commit

If you are pricing one, the questions are about the whole installation rather than the machine alone. Ask TITANS what the configured quote includes - spindle and control options, tooling, workholding, delivery and commissioning - and what the lead time is. Ask what the power and air requirements are, and what the service and spares picture looks like in your region. And ask for a cutting demonstration in the material you actually run, because a BT30 machine's value is in the metal it removes per hour, not in any single spec.

Rigidity & frame

The Syil X5 is built on a schneeberger mineral-cast (epoxy granite) bed frame. Rigidity is the property that separates a mill from a router: the frame has to resist the forces of cutting metal without deflecting, and mass is how it does that. It is the single most heavily weighted axis in our mill score for that reason.

The ways are THK high-precision ball screws and linear guides, which carry the axes and set how squarely the machine holds its geometry under load.

Spindle & power

The spindle is rated at 4800 W and turns to 20,000 RPM on a BT30, direct-coupled taper. On a mill, power and the torque behind it matter more than peak RPM - torque is what drives a cutter through steel without stalling, where a high-RPM router spindle would rub and burn.

Tool changer

The Syil X5 has a 16-pocket automatic tool changer. An ATC turns a multi-tool job from a series of manual stops into an unattended run, and it is the headline feature of this whole segment - most desktop mills do not have one.

Work envelope

The travels are 300 × 260 × 300 mm. Mills are deliberately small and deep rather than wide - metal parts are thick, not sheet-sized - so a modest envelope with generous Z is exactly what this class is built around.

A mill is not a finished setup out of the box. These are the parts a working metal setup needs alongside the machine itself.

End mills and tool holders

A mill cuts with end mills held in collets or tool holders sized to its spindle taper (R8, BT30, ER). The taper decides which holders fit, so buy tooling to the machine's spindle rather than generically.

A vice and workholding

Metal has to be clamped hard and square. A precision milling vice, and a set of clamps or fixture plate, is what actually holds the tolerance the machine is capable of.

Cutting fluid or mist coolant

Metal cutting generates heat that dulls tools and welds chips to the work. Flood or mist coolant, or at minimum a manual cutting fluid, keeps the cutter alive and the finish clean.

A touch probe or edge finder

Finding the exact zero on a metal part is what makes the second and third parts match the first. An edge finder is the minimum; a touch probe automates it.
