Why is my laser engraving faint or inconsistent?

The engraving is too light, uneven across the piece, or discoloured with a smoky-yellow cast. Unlike cutting, engraving is about controlled surface marking, so the failures cluster around focus, energy density, and how the image itself was prepared.

Quick answer. Start with focus and energy density - a defocused beam or too little power at too high a speed gives a faint, patchy mark. After that, look at the source image resolution and the air-assist, and remember some materials simply yellow under heat.

    Focus wrong

    The whole engraving is weak and soft-edged. The beam is not concentrated at the surface.

    The fix
    Reset the focal distance. As with cutting, focus is the first thing to confirm - a spread beam marks faintly everywhere.

    Power too low or speed too high (energy density)

    The mark is faint but even. Each pass is depositing too little energy per unit area.

    The fix
    Raise power or slow the engrave to increase density, in small steps. Run a material test grid of power-versus-speed to find the setting that marks cleanly without over-burning.

    Image resolution or line density too low

    The engrave looks coarse, banded, or gappy rather than solid. The raster lines are too far apart or the source image is low-resolution.

    The fix
    Increase the line density (lines per inch) and use a higher-resolution source image, matched to what your machine can actually resolve.

    Air-assist airflow wrong

    The mark is sooty, inconsistent, or hazed with smoke residue. Combustion products are sitting in the beam and on the surface.

    The fix
    Set air-assist to clear smoke and debris from the cut zone - enough to keep the surface clean, not so much it disturbs the material. Clean airflow gives a cleaner, more consistent mark.

    Material yellows or discolours under heat

    A smoky-yellow or scorched halo around an otherwise correct engrave, on woods and some plastics.

    The fix
    Reduce heat input (faster, lower power, or more air), mask the surface, or accept the material's behaviour. Some species and plastics simply discolour - it is the material, not a fault.

Why is my laser engraving coming out smoky-yellow?
