The 65mm compact router most desktop CNC makers fit when their machine ships without a spindle - 1-1/4 HP, variable speed, and the body diameter the common mounts are cut for.
Spindle hardware sits between the controller and the cut, so it decides both how much material you can remove and how much of the process you can automate. It is also, on brushed motors, a wear item rather than a permanent fixture.
What you get
Brushed motors of this class are consumables rather than permanent fixtures. The brushes wear, the bearings follow, and the failure is gradual - cut quality degrades and the motor runs hotter over weeks rather than failing outright, which is why it is so often mistaken for a feeds-and-speeds problem.
motors in this class have very little low-end torque. They hold speed acceptably in light passes and bog down quickly under load, which is the practical difference between one of these and a VFD spindle that can be commanded by G-code and holds its speed as the cut loads it up.

When to reach for it - and when not
- Replacing a worn unit, where cut quality has declined gradually and the motor runs hotter than it used to.
- Building or repairing a machine in the same class, where the mount and collet already match.
- Expecting it to hold speed under heavy load - this class of motor sags, which drops chip load exactly when the cut is hardest.
- Assuming a drop-in fit. Body diameter decides the mount and the dust shoe, and the common sizes are not interchangeable.
What wears it out
Brushed motors are consumable. Brushes wear first, bearings follow, and the decline is gradual - hotter running and slowly worsening cut quality over weeks rather than a clean failure. At this price replacing usually costs less than servicing, which is worth knowing before you spend an evening diagnosing feeds and speeds.
Getting the settings right
Spindle speed is one of the two inputs that set chip load, so changing motor changes your feeds. If you are replacing a worn motor with the same class, your existing settings carry over; if you are moving to a different RPM range, recalculate before the first cut rather than assuming the old numbers hold.
Check the mount bore before ordering. Spindle body diameter determines both the mount and the dust shoe, so changing spindle usually means changing both - 52mm, 65mm and 80mm are all common on desktop machines and none are interchangeable without a new mount.
