Spindle choice on a desktop machine comes down to three tiers, and the differences matter more than the wattage on the box. Brushed DC motors of the 775 class are cheap, noisy and wear out - the brushes are the consumable. Trim routers give real power for the money and a high RPM ceiling, but they are loud, have no speed feedback under load, and cannot be commanded by G-code. VFD spindles are quiet, hold their speed under load and can be controlled by the controller, which is what makes automatic operation practical.
Rated wattage is the least useful number in the comparison, because manufacturers rate it inconsistently and often at peak rather than continuous. A 400W spindle held at full load in hardwood will derate as it heats; a 710W trim router quoted at peak is not delivering that continuously either.
The upgrade worth making first is usually not the spindle at all. On most desktop machines the binding constraint is frame rigidity, and a more powerful motor bolted to a gantry that flexes simply reaches the same chatter limit with more noise. Work through rigidity, tramming and workholding before spending on watts - if your cuts are chattering rather than stalling, power is not the problem you have.
The one case where spindle choice genuinely decides capability is automation. If you want to run a job without standing over the machine, you need something the controller can command: start, stop and set RPM from G-code. That is a VFD spindle, and it is the reason people move up far more often than raw power is.

Spindle body diameter determines both the mount and the dust shoe, so changing spindle usually means changing both. Check the mount bore on your machine before buying - 52mm, 65mm and 80mm are common and are not interchangeable without a new mount.
A VFD spindle needs a variable frequency drive and wiring to the controller; it is not a drop-in swap for a trim router. Budget for the drive, the cable and the controller configuration, not just the motor.
Collet standard follows the spindle, and it is easy to miss. Trim routers typically take 1/4-inch and 1/8-inch collets in their own fitting; VFD spindles are usually ER11 or ER20. Changing spindle therefore changes which cutters you can hold, so check your existing bit collection against the new standard before ordering.
Weight matters on a light gantry. A heavier spindle on a machine designed around a trim router adds moving mass the Z axis was not specified for, which shows up as slower safe rapids and, on belt-driven Z, occasional dropped position. Check what the machine's own maker fits before assuming a bigger motor is an upgrade.
