Surfacing hardware is bought once and used rarely, which is exactly why it is worth getting right. The job it does - making the bed parallel to the gantry rather than to the floor - is one nothing else on the machine can do for you.

What you get

A surfacing bit is a wide, shallow cutter with replaceable or brazed carbide wings, and the job it does is flatness rather than material removal. Cutting diameter is the specification that matters: a wider bit clears the bed in fewer passes and leaves fewer overlap marks, but asks proportionally more torque from the spindle. On a light gantry a narrower bit taking more passes is the safer trade.

What is not in the box is the spoilboard itself. MDF is the usual choice because it is flat, cheap and cuts predictably, and it is expected to be resurfaced several times before replacement - the board is the consumable here, not the cutter.

What the specifications mean in use

A 1/4-inch shank is the stiff one
Shank diameter decides deflection, and deflection decides whether a deep pass wanders. A 1/4-inch shank is roughly four times stiffer in bending than a 1/8-inch one for the same stickout, which is why larger machines standardise on it and why it will take a deeper pass without the cut drifting. The cost is fitment: it needs a collet sized for it, and no adapter runs the other way.

When to reach for it - and when not

  • After assembling or re-levelling the machine, to make the bed parallel to the gantry rather than to the floor.
  • When cut depth stops being consistent corner to corner across the envelope.
  • Flattening slabs and thick stock too wide for a planer, using the machine as a router sled.
Look elsewhere for
  • Deep passes. This is a finishing operation on a sacrificial surface - take the lightest cut that cleans the whole bed.

What wears it out

The spoilboard is the consumable: MDF is the usual choice because it is flat, cheap and predictable, and it is expected to be resurfaced several times before it is replaced. Every resurfacing pass costs thickness you cannot recover, so take the lightest cut that cleans the whole bed.

Getting the settings right

Surfacing is a finishing operation on a sacrificial surface, not a production cut. Run it slowly with a large stepover - 60 to 70% of the cutting diameter is typical - and take the lightest pass that cleans the whole bed. Every pass costs board thickness you cannot recover.

Lower the RPM than instinct suggests. A wide cutter has a high surface speed at the rim even at modest spindle speeds, and running it fast burns the MDF and loads the flutes with resin rather than cutting cleanly. If the surface comes off glazed rather than matte, the speed is too high.
