A belt-driven machine with the Carbide 3D software stack and community behind it, which is genuinely worth something when a job fails at 2am. It will cut wood and plastics well. What it will not do is hold position under the loads that make ball screws worth their cost.

Ball screws and linear rails on all three axes, built as a platform to run jobs back to back rather than one at a time. The honest caveat is on our side as much as theirs: Carbide 3D does not publish X/Y cutting travel in any document we could find, so this page cannot tell you exactly how large a part it cuts.

The verdict

For hobby work in wood and plastics, the Shapeoko 4 is the sane purchase and the extra $2,000 buys capability most people will not use.

For work that has to pay for itself, the 5.1 Pro is a different class of machine - ball screws and linear rails are the expensive things to retrofit and it has both. Ask Carbide 3D for the exact X and Y travel in writing before ordering, because they do not publish it and it is the specification you are most likely to regret.

Questions, answered

Does the Shapeoko 5.1 Pro come with a spindle?
No. Carbide 3D lists a 65mm trim router or VFD spindle under 'what you need to provide', so it is a required purchase rather than an upgrade. The same is true of the Shapeoko 4 - treat both list prices as a floor.
Why does the Shapeoko 5.1 Pro have no score on this site?
Because Carbide 3D does not publish enough of the specification for our model to characterise it - most importantly the X/Y cutting travel. Rather than print a number that would read as a verdict on the machine, we withhold it and say which components we could not compute.
