These two look like the same machine on paper - 4x4 footprint, ball screws, linear guides, sold direct - and the sticker gap ($3,800 against $7,495) is misleading in both directions. The X-Carve Pro arrives with a 2 hp VFD spindle fitted; the Shapeoko ships as a bare platform you add a router to. Once you spindle the Shapeoko the gap narrows sharply. And in a detail that says a lot about the category, neither Carbide 3D nor Inventables publishes the machine's actual X/Y cutting travel - both quote only the '4x4' size class - so neither page can tell you exactly how big a part it cuts.

Buy this for the ecosystem and the lower entry price

The Carbide Create/Motion software stack and a very large, active community are the real product here, and the $3,800 entry is genuinely lower - as long as you remember it buys no spindle. Add a router or VFD and the price moves toward the X-Carve's. It is the pick if you want the ecosystem and are happy to spec your own spindle; the catch is the one every buyer should push on, which is that Carbide does not publish the cutting travel.

Buy this to cut on day one with a real spindle

The price includes a 2 hp / 1.5 kW VFD spindle, which is the single biggest difference and the reason the higher sticker is less of a gap than it looks - you are not buying a router separately. Inventables also publishes more of the specification, so it is the only one of the two we can put a score against. The documented friction is Easel: the software is capable but its best features sit behind a subscription, which is a running cost rather than a one-off.

The verdict

The honest way to read the price gap is spindle-in versus spindle-out. The X-Carve Pro's $7,495 includes a 2 hp VFD; the Shapeoko's $3,800 does not include any spindle, and a comparable VFD plus mount closes a large part of the difference. Compare the finished cost of cutting, not the sticker.

The X-Carve Pro is the machine we can score, because Inventables publishes its spindle and material range where Carbide 3D publishes almost nothing scoreable about the 5.1 Pro. That is not proof the X-Carve is the better machine - it is proof it is the better-documented one, which on this site is a real point in its favour.

Both withhold the one figure a 4x4 buyer most wants: the exact X and Y cutting travel. Whichever you lean toward, ask the maker for that number in writing before ordering - it is the specification most likely to disappoint against the '4x4' name.

Why is the X-Carve Pro scored but the Shapeoko 5.1 Pro is not?
Because Inventables publishes enough of the X-Carve Pro's specification to characterise it - spindle power, drive, material range - while Carbide 3D publishes almost nothing scoreable about the Shapeoko 5.1 Pro beyond its price and drive type. Neither publishes X/Y cutting travel, but the X-Carve clears our coverage floor on what it does publish and the Shapeoko does not.
Is the X-Carve Pro really twice the price of the Shapeoko?
On the sticker, almost - but the X-Carve includes a 2 hp VFD spindle and the Shapeoko includes none. Add a comparable spindle and mount to the Shapeoko and much of the gap closes. Compare the cost of a machine that can actually cut, not the cost of the box.
What is the catch with X-Carve's Easel software?
Easel is genuinely easy to start with, but its more capable features - the ones you grow into - sit behind an Easel Pro subscription. That is a running cost to factor in, where the Shapeoko's Carbide Create has a capable free tier and a one-time Pro unlock.
