These three are the serious hobbyist's shortlist: all ball-screw driven, all shipping without a spindle, all a genuine step above a belt machine. What separates them on this page is partly the machine and partly the paperwork - Onefinity and Sienci publish enough to score in the high 60s, while Carbide 3D withholds the Shapeoko's cutting travel and lands unscored. That is not us guessing that the Shapeoko is worse; it is us refusing to score what its maker will not print.

Buy this for the software stack and the largest bed

Ball screws and linear rails on every axis, the Carbide Create/Motion ecosystem, and the biggest envelope of the three. The catch is on the page: Carbide 3D does not publish the X/Y cutting travel, so we cannot score it and you cannot know exactly how large a part it cuts without asking them. Buy it for the ecosystem, and get the travel in writing first.

Buy this for closed-loop drive at the price

Closed-loop steppers on every axis and 600 IPM rapids, which is the fastest and most position-secure motion of the three, and it is fully documented - the score rests on published figures. The 33-inch square bed is smaller than the Shapeoko's but larger than the LongMill's, and the whole machine is the most complete specification here.

Buy this for the most machine per dollar

Lead screws rather than ball screws, but closed-loop NEMA 23 motors, 15mm profiled rails and the lowest price of the three - Sienci lists it at CA$1,890. It is the value pick, and the only caveat is the one every machine here shares: no spindle in the box.

The verdict

If you want the fastest, most position-secure motion and a number you can fully trust, the Onefinity Elite Woodworker is the pick - closed-loop drive on every axis, and nothing about its score rests on an unknown.

If price is the deciding factor, the LongMill MK3 does the most for the money and gives up only ball screws for lead screws, which matters far less than the closed-loop motors it keeps.

The Shapeoko 5.1 Pro may well be the best machine of the three - ball screws, linear rails and the largest bed - but we will not put a score against a machine whose maker withholds its cutting travel. If you are choosing it, ask Carbide 3D for the exact X and Y travel in writing before you order.

Questions, answered

Why is the Shapeoko unscored when the other two have numbers?
Because Carbide 3D does not publish the Shapeoko 5.1 Pro's X/Y cutting travel, and work area is the single most heavily weighted part of our model. Rather than invent a figure from the machine's '4x4' name - which is a nominal size, not a measured travel - we withhold the score and say so. Onefinity and Sienci publish their cutting areas, so they score.
Is a lead screw on the LongMill a real disadvantage against the ball screws on the others?
Less than most buyers expect. Ball screws are more efficient and backlash-free, which is why they cost more, but a well-made lead screw with closed-loop motors - which the LongMill has - holds position well in wood and plastics. The closed-loop drive matters more than the screw type for the work these machines actually do.
Do any of the three include a spindle?
No. All three ship as motion platforms and take a separate router or spindle - 65mm or 80mm on all of them. Treat every price here as a floor, and budget for the router, collets and cutters before the machine can cut anything.
