Dust collection on a CNC is a health control, not a housekeeping convenience, and the distinction changes what you buy. MDF dust carries formaldehyde-based binder; FR4 and carbon fibre are respiratory hazards outright; even hardwood dust is a known irritant. Capture happens at the cutter or it does not happen at all - a shop vac in the corner is doing almost nothing.
Start with the dust shoe, because it is the part that decides capture. Shoe diameter must match your spindle or router body - 52mm, 65mm and 69mm are the common sizes on desktop machines and none are interchangeable. Then size the hose to the shoe, and only then worry about the extractor itself.
Measure the spindle body, not the collet nut, when choosing a shoe. A 65mm shoe on a 52mm spindle will not seal, and a shoe that does not seal loses most of its capture. Some shoes ship with adapters for two sizes; check before assuming.
Hose diameter is a trade-off rather than a bigger-is-better choice. A wider hose moves more air at lower velocity, which is right for a large extractor; a narrower one keeps velocity up, which matters on a shop vac. Keep the run as short and as straight as the bench allows, because every bend costs airflow and airflow is the entire mechanism.

One shoe per spindle diameter you actually run, and a spare hose length. Clear hose is worth the small premium because you can see a blockage forming rather than discovering it as a loss of suction.
The brush skirt on a dust shoe is a wear item - it goes stiff and stops sealing against the work. When capture quality drops noticeably, check the brush before assuming the extractor has weakened.
